In this episode of The Hacka Podcast, we were joined by two guests – Vito Di Giovanni from DiGiovanni Technologies and Benjamin Cashen from Cashen Creative – to talk about excellence in church production. But what quickly became clear was that excellence has far less to do with equipment than we sometimes think. Our conversation kept coming back to people, leadership, worship and the motives behind why we serve.

One of the most important distinctions Vito and Ben made was between excellence and perfectionism. Perfectionism focuses on what went wrong and can create unhealthy pressure on a team. Excellence is a pursuit, giving God our best while creating an environment where people are encouraged to grow.

We also talked about the responsibility leaders have to develop people rather than simply fill positions. A healthy ministry shouldn’t depend entirely on one person. Whether we’re leading production, worship or another area of the church, part of our responsibility is mentoring others, giving them meaningful opportunities and preparing them to carry responsibility themselves.

The conversation then shifted to how we view production ministry itself. Vito challenged us to stop seeing production and worship as two separate teams. The people running sound, cameras, lighting and media are part of the worship team, and when they approach their role through the lens of a worshipper, it changes how they serve. Being spiritually engaged and sensitive to what is happening in the room matters just as much as technical ability.

There was so much in this conversation that applies well beyond church production. It speaks to how we lead, how we develop people, how we approach excellence and how we view the privilege of serving in God’s house.

10 Key Takeaways

1. Excellence is not perfectionism. Give God your best without demanding the impossible.

2. Develop people, not just positions. A filled roster isn’t the same as a healthy ministry.

3. Train your replacement. Healthy leaders build teams that can function without them.

4. Create a mentorship cycle. Let people watch, learn, participate and eventually lead.

5. The size of the room doesn’t matter. Serve 50 with the same heart you would serve 40,000.

6. Celebrate other people’s success. Great leaders find fulfilment in seeing others grow.

7. Production is part of worship. Technology should serve what God is doing in the room.

8. Stay spiritually engaged. Don’t operate on autopilot during a service.

9. People matter more than gear. Better equipment cannot replace trained, invested people.

10. Every position carries purpose. Serving in God’s house is an honour, not an inconvenience.

Final Thought

What stayed with me after this conversation was how little we actually talked about gear.

When I sat down with two people who have spent years working in production at churches, conferences and major events, I could have expected a conversation about equipment, systems and technical excellence. Instead, we talked about people, discipleship, worship, mentorship and serving God.

That tells us something.

The best technology can improve what we do, but it can’t replace the right culture. We need people who understand that they’re not just filling a position—they’re serving God, serving people and contributing to what God is doing in the room.

Whether you’re behind a pulpit, behind a camera, behind a sound console or behind a computer clicking slides, there is purpose in your position.

The missing mindset in church production may simply be remembering that production was ministry all along.
